Criminal Justice
Time to work on our Criminal Justice System. Over the years, America has moved away from an equitable system of justice to embrace a violent, often counter productive system of revenge and retribution rather than seeking real solutions to crime in America. We have a system now that seems unconcerned with recidivism because some have turned our system into yet another "corporate profit center" where inmates equate to dollars. Our system is racially biased. Our prosecutors seek harsh penalties for the poor in cases involving small dollar amounts even as multi-billion dollar white collar scams bilk American's of their pensions and retirements...all with little more than a slap on their white, rich wrists. We have embraced victims rights to the exclusion of society's rights and needs for safe and secure streets. I do not oppose these rights but in the over all picture, justice should be blind to the extent that often victims are only interested in revenge while justice needs to address the larger picture of what truly provides for the good of society as a whole. Our system should not cater to the desires for revenge but for the future safety of all while retaining an over all respect for the law. Consider this article in Parade Magazine Online. . |
